POSITION DESCRIPTION:
T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is looking for a self-motivated, dedicated, and passionate park service professional to fill a vacant Park Ranger position.
St. Joseph Peninsula State Park suffered severe damages from Hurricane Michael and redevelopment and reconstruction efforts are in progress. When fully re-opened the park will have:
9 miles of beach & bay access shoreline, multiple beach day use areas, Multiple Nature Trails, a 1,700 Acre Wilderness Preserve, 2 full service family campgrounds, a separate youth/group campsite area, 7 primitive wilderness campsites, 8 full use cabins, a full-service boat ramp, and high day use visitation.
Currently the park is open for day use, allowing visitors access to:
Gulf Beachside, St. Joseph Bay Access , kayak launch, boat ramp & marina access, a 1 mile loop nature trail, concession service, and 9 miles of beach shoreline for walking/fishing/nature viewing. The park is home to numerous important and protected cultural & archaeological sites and is one of the most prominent state parks for imperiled species protection including many shorebird species and is a prominent sea turtle nesting site. The Joseph Peninsula State Park team also manages the Constitution Convention Museum State Park in Port St. Joe.

The applicant must possess good public relations skills, be able to work both independently and as part of a large team unit, can perform or learn a variety of skilled trade functions using assorted equipment and tools. The applicant must be able to work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays, maintain a valid Class E driver license, successfully complete ranger academy, and pass a background and fingerprint check.

DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:

Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply. This is moderately independent work providing Visitor Services, Resource Management, Maintenance, Administration and Protection of St. Joseph Peninsula State Park.

VISITOR SERVICES - Explains facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education; meets visitors, answers questions, provides information and directions in an accurate and professional manner. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. Provides natural and cultural history interpretive programs and services via cavern tours, presentations, walks and other programs and unit specific services as directed.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT . Recognizes biological communities and the natural processes required for their maintenance. Learns to identify invasive exotic plant species and how to safely and effectively remove them. Observes, maintains and protects the natural, cultural, historic and archaeological resources of the park. Participates in the FPS Prescribed burning program.

MAINTENANCE - Maintains park structures, facilities, equipment, vehicles, and grounds through routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance practices. Conducts routine inspections to ensure proper maintenance standards are met. Learns basic skills to troubleshoot and maintain campsite and overall park facilities. Maintains cleanliness of grounds and facilities.

ADMINISTRATION - Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including visitation, vehicle usage, purchase requests, and incidents. Answers telephone calls and operates park radio, computer, and various office equipment. Conducts purchasing and fiscal activities in compliance with established procedures. Collects fees, performs cash register transactions and reconciles receipts. Orders, sells and inventories resale merchandise. Answers correspondence and maintains park files.

PROTECTION - Performs routine patrols and security checks; ensures adherence to the Park Protection Plan. Opens and/or secures park facilities as appropriate. Interprets and enforces park rules pertaining to all natural and cultural resources and facilities and use thereof for the safety and enjoyment of the visitor. Responsible for security of cash fund.

OTHER Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

ABILITY TO:

  • Participate in resource management tasks, including but not limited to, prescribed fire activities, non-native plant removal which may include application of herbicide
  • Follow verbal and written instructions/directions
  • Work independently with minimal supervision

  • Speak in public & give presentations or interpretive programs
  • Understand and apply rules, directives, policies, laws and regulations

  • Maintain a valid driver's license
  • Properly wear uniform
  • Comply with male and female hair grooming standards and body art and piercing restrictions
  • Learn & become proficient in less experienced skillsets/areas

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
